Playcation in the Studio
The groups have been small but wildly creative and fun.
I’ve now had two Playdates live in the studio. In person is such a different experience than online. Both have their merits, of course, but gathering in person is truly a treat. There is more socialization, as we can chat while we sew. Yeah, you can do that online, but device microphones pick up the machine noise so much that it is hard to talk over them. We can also see live what people are making and feed off that creative energy. Sharing happens in virtual events too, but at more scheduled times. Yet, online, it can be easy, as a participant, to put your head down and sew. There’s something to be said for that too. Everyone is going to have their preferences.
As a teacher, I do like both. Even when it is the same class it feels like an apples to oranges comparison. I run them a bit different and the experience is different.
I will say this, though. It is thrilling to me to welcome students to my space, share creativity (and snacks) in action here, and have everyone come together. This is spurring me on to get some bigger retreat type events - proper Playcations - organized for later this year. In the meantime, we do have Fika Friday, on the first Friday of the month where everyone is welcome for treats and conversation.
